Sub-Zero 601F/0 Freezer Repair: Evaporator Replacement

Symptoms

  • Freezer not reaching set temperature
  • Unit running almost nonstop
  • Weak cooling performance
  • Compressor starting inconsistently
  • Frost pattern not forming correctly on evaporator

Initial diagnostics

We performed a full professional diagnostic including:

  • Electrical testing of compressor and start components

  • Pressure readings of the sealed system

  • Visual inspection of evaporator and tubing

  • Leak detection using nitrogen and electronic tools

The compressor was mechanically healthy, but the sealed system showed signs of refrigerant loss.

Root cause of the problem

The real problem was a leaking evaporator.
Multiple pinhole leaks were found directly in the evaporator coils, causing continuous refrigerant loss.

Additionally, the start relay on the compressor was weak, reducing its ability to start under load.

💡 This is a classic case where replacing the compressor would not fix the real problem.
The sealed system leak had to be resolved first.

How we repaired the appliance

  1. Step 1 – Evaporator Replacement

  2. Step 2 – Start Relay Replacement

A new high-quality start relay was installed to restore proper compressor startup.

  3. Step 3 – Sealed System Service

System evacuation, nitrogen pressure test, deep vacuum, and precise refrigerant recharge.
